What is Yoga and it's benefits
Writen by: Joan
What is yoga?
"The knowledge meant to make a person mature as an individual is called yogasastra.
A mature individual is one who is free from conflicts, fear, agitation,
guilt, and hurt."
- Swami Dayananda
Awakening insight through a process of purification
Yoga is an ancient art and science that has been passed down through the
generations over a few thousand years. The study and practice of yoga unveils
to the practitioner the nature of his own self; a self that shines and illuminates
every aspect of being. That light within is already present but may be hidden
under numerous layers of ignorance and conditioning and that is why the study
of yoga is vital. Yoga uncovers those layers and is a process of purification.
The practice clears the accumulation of debris collected over the years through
unconscious habits and living. A clear and objective perception based on
sensitivity grows, yet all is grounded in clarity and strength. The practice
awakens insight.
The teachings and the continued practice of yoga help develop tranquility. One
remains relatively calm even through the more demanding circumstances. Being
more balanced in activity will facilitate right action, as one is less likely to
dissipate energy in worry or frantic movement. One’s sense of observation
becomes very much sharper and what is necessary to be done is done as
efficiently as possible. The light of clarity begins to shine on all facets of life.
The benefits of a yoga practice
"But I'm not flexible!" is the usual comment heard. Yoga uses the body as an
incredible tool that gives instant feedback to the practitioner. It is the training
and cultivation of the mind that is of crucial importance, however, with the
physical activity, the body gains strength and flexibility, that will in turn,
support understanding of the teachings.
I may start off wanting only to relax and get a good stretch. However, as the
practice continues to deepen, the benefits begin to seep through: keener senses,
increased energy, strength and sensitivity, a sense of contentment and calm.
Through right guidance and perseverance, one begins to overcome little fears,
gradually building up courage and trust. One learns to face fears and limitations
with kindness yet with firmness and also to release them as well.
Flexibility and good health are only secondary benefits of the depth of yoga; the
real benefit of yoga is that it encourages the natural intelligence of the body to
awaken to its fullest potential.
When an individual lives in equipoise, free from the clutches of an unruly mind,
then he truly becomes an individual, undivided and whole. In wholeness, there
is maturity and a blossoming of intelligence, an alignment of thought, word and
action based on certain universal values. Wholeness is without fragmentation.
