Holiday - Switzerland - Wo gibt es Bier Part 4 - Boudry - Motiers

Writen by: Paul le Roux

Cruex Du Van La Ferme du Soliat
Leaving the "Cave a Glace", with its subzero temperatures, and back out into the sunshine (at around 20 degrees Celsius or so in the shade), it was only short while longer that we'd walk together, before taking some photos at the entrance to the Poeta Raisse, and Philipp would join me for a sneak preview of the this peaceful gorge, with its almost fairytale appeal, little waterfalls about to accompany me on my descent.

With Philipp now making his way off to Le Chasseron, I was soon immersed in the sounds of the water. And this I tend to do very well, I might add. I tend to quickly forget that the rest of the planet exists at times like these, like when staring blankly into a fire in the evening, soaking up its warmth and relaxing just about every muscle you've got aside from those that hold you up in your chair.

If you are looking for a little slidehow of the great scenery, here it is.

As usual, no difficulties with the path; as safe as you could want it to be - for a gorge, that is. Now the thing I mentioned earlier about why doing this route this way round is the better way, is because it's all downhill from here on. I don't think coming up this way could be half as nice, as you'd be bound to be out of breath ascending this lot, but I was merrily descending at my own pace, taking it all in. At this point I should mention that I still had a few snacks in my pack, as there's no place to buy anything. Actually, come to think of it, I usually have a few things to spare by the time I've finished a hike. Better to have than to have not, eh?

Emerging feeling brand new (with two year warranty and all), it's a little way to go down to Motiers, on the Areuse river (the one we first crossed at Boudry) and although extremely tempted to pay a visit to Le Chateau de Motiers, given my love of castles, I knew that the train from Fleurier didn't run as often as I'd thought it might (Switzerland does generally spoil a person in terms of public transport!), so decided I'd save that visit for another day. Motiers station was quiet. Hardly anybody waiting for a train, and it was more time to just soak it all up, the peace. Especially when you're so used to city life. Here you start to wonder just why in hell anybody would want to live in big crazy cities, where life flies by, when you've got places like this where you can almost hear yourself just being alive. This is an experience where you notice things. You see nature, not like on a safari nor like on a postcard, and even photographs honestly don't come anywhere near doing justice to the experience of being here. Photos are dead. Inanimate. When you look at the pictures here you might think, "Oh, that's nice. How quaint!" But being here, miles from any rush of a crazy city, you don't see the images – you feel them. Live them, if only for a short spell.

This was definitely a welcomed break from it all for me. The train back to Yverdon-les-Bains or Neuchatel would go back past Noirague, which I'd only just bypassed on the way up to the Creux du Van.

I will return. Someday.

Authour: Paul's incredible adventures across Europe a few years back has landed him somewhere in Switzerland and surprisingly he decided to hike to the mountains for some fresh air and exercise. This is the fourth and final part of his article. Boohoo! But no worries, more articles on other adventures will come.
