Travels to Cebu Philippines
The Philippines is one of the most unique and colorful nation located in Southeast Asia. The archipelago consists of more than 7,000 islands, of which 880 are inhabited. The major ones are Luzon in the north, the Visayas in the center, and Mindanao in the south. Philippines has many culural sights that you as a tourist shouldn't miss. English is widely spoken in the Philippines, and most signs are in English so Singapore travellers and tourists need not worry.
Touring Cebu. Cebu is the second largest city in the Philippines after Manila. Cebu offers it's visitors vast stretches of beautiful white sandy beaches, excellent diving spots, fancy malls, luxurious resorts, hotels, discos, bars, museums and parks. Cebu is characterized by narrow coastlines, limestone plateaus, coastal plains but with predominant rolling hills and rugged mountain ranges traversing the northern and southern lengths of the island. It is the gateway in central and southern Philippines and is one of the country's favorite tourist destination. It is also a jumped-off point for tourists whose travels includes the neighboring islands of the Visayas and Mindanao.
At Cebu, you can visit Basilica Minor del Santo Nino which dates back to the Spanish colonial era, located opposite the Cebu City Hall. Here you can view the image of Santo Nino or the Holy Infant, the oldest relic in the Philippines.
Nearby is the "Magellan's Cross"" which was named after Ferdinand Magellan, a renowned Portuguese explorer who came to Cebu in the early 1500s. It stands within a open shrine commemorating the conversion of the first Filipinos to Christianity. Pieces of the original cross are believed to be encased in the present cross. This is the place where mass baptism is done.
Fort San Pedro located at Pier Area is the tiniest and oldest fortress in the country. This served as defence against Muslim raiders and was completed in 1738. It has a total inside area of 2,025 sq. meters. The walls are 20 feet high, 8 feet thick and towers are 30 feet high from the ground level and is triangular in shape. It served many uses in it's history, from a rebel stronghold to an American military barracks to national museum now. The fort is right next to another city landmark, Plaza Independencia.
Cebu's Chinese presence is very visible and one of the more populartourist destinations in the city is the Taoist Temple, located at the highest elevation of the Beverly Hills. This must-visit place of worship has successfully preserved the teachings of Lao Tze, the chinese philosopher. Attractions here consist of huge, multi-color dragons, a replica of the Great Wall of China, spacious balconies offering scenic views, souvenir shops, mini library with instructional materials, and the 99 escalating steps. You can climb up the 99 steps to light joss sticks and have your fortune read by monks as well as see the panaromic view of Cebu City.
