Brugge Canals Brugge church or our lady Waters and canals Brugge Belgium
A beautiful country of great diversity and culture, with great historical significance, Belgium obtained independence in 1830, becoming a member of the "Benelux" countries. Today it is a modern industrialized first world state. It is an active participating member of both the U.N.O and European Community. Education in Belgium is compulsory between the ages of 6 - 18 years old and is taught in various languages .The countries official languages are French, Flams (Flemish) and German. English is spoken too.

With its winding canals, monumental buildings and plush winter snow blanket Brugge holds tradition strong as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is known as "Venice Of The North" and was put on the World Heritage List in the year 2000.Its roots can traced back approximately Two thousand years ago when it began as a strong Roman-Gallic settlement that traded with the British isles and surrounding regions.

Its quality of restaurants and cuisine are of exceptionally high standard, probably of the best in the world. There is a wide selection of restaurants, bars and coffee shops to while on tour in Brugge including those of international flavours. Fish and seafood delicacies are popular in Brugge. There are numerous well-furbished marketplaces to visit, which are stocked to the brim with anything from arts, and crafts to fruit and vegetable stalls. While touring on foot try some of their scrumptious French fries and mayonnaise. Historically, the ancient medieval capitol of the Flanders, it was the primary wool manufacturing town of the region. There were hundreds of lace makers based in the town. To this day hand made lace souvenirs are sold extensively to the public. The country is internationally acclaimed for its prestigious chocolate making. Excellent quality chocolates such as Godiva and Neuhaus, to name a few, are available throughout the town, which also has its own chocolate museum. The countries modern, effective transport network and extensive railway system are complementary to tourists, making travel easy. Travelling around Brugge by horse drawn cart on its lovely cobbled roads while enjoying its breathtaking scenery is an absolute must! The numerous canals, ancient buildings and bridges can be explored by boat. These boat trips can be taken from near The Church Of Our Lady. The church itself is quite something to see. The hiring of bicycles is "Big Time" there, making it easy to nip around the town. The modern interior heated minibuses are a pleasure to travel on during winter. The snow of winter adds to the awe and grandeur of the old town. There are information bureaus available if need be, however I found the people of Brugge to be incredibly helpful and friendly. They are very warmhearted and extremely proud of their remarkable city. The local police were always willing to give directions and advice about the best places to be seen. Beer making in Belgium is a major industry. With hundreds of different kinds of beers partying and pub-crawling is an experience for the active. There are numerous tourists from abroad adding to the air of excitement. Visiting the new concert hall is a good idea.

Brugge truly is a "masterpiece" and a city well worth visiting. The name itself meaning "Bridges" most appropriately...
